Grocery Shopping on a Budget Cont'd

It’s lunchtime. Everyone headed out the door to hit up the drive-thru or to sit down and be waited upon. You on the other hand got up, made your 30 minute or less meal and came to work prepared. So what do you prepare and how to afford it?

Start buy buying your chicken or other meat in a reasonably sized package at a reasonable price. Then individualize their packaging by sticking them in the freezer in their own little baggie and cook as needed. I can make a pack of chicken last for over a week. My meals are things like chicken pasta, chicken with green beans and rice, chicken with tomato and kalamata olives, or even a chicken salad.

Tip: Chicken breast filets cook faster then a full chicken breast.

Grocery store salad bars can be a great deal because you can buy what you need not what is jarred or canned. I love kalamata olives but buying them jarred is way too expensive. Finding them at a grocery store olive bar, buying only what I need is cheap; by as much as $4 cheaper. Score. If your grocery store only sells their olive bar or salad bar pre-packaged then ask them to put that package into a smaller container. I’ve done it with no shame. I’m not rich, the economy still sucks and I’m learning how not to sacrifice everything just adjust to what can be done!

When you don't feel like cooking don't be afraid to take that sandwich and/or that can of soup with you as a lunch. Look, if you can go to Olive Garden or another restaurant and pay for a half-sandwich and soup then why can’t you bring the same thing from home? I throw a whole tomato, two slices of bread with a can of soup in my lunch bag and I'm good to go.

Tip: Large microwavable coffee mugs make great microwave containers to heat up the soup in.

Since we mentioned sandwiches can I just add that wow can they save you money and I’m not only talking the peanut butter ones. Walmart has some really great prices on lunchmeat and cheese that is prepackaged. I often find Oscar Myer or Hillshire Farms meats for $3 a package. Not too shabby and the new packaging makes the meat stay fresh even longer. Do you want sandwich toppings like the ones you can find at Subway? Well don’t fret because a little pre-kitchen prep of slicing up the veggies and you are golden. Buying a single green bell pepper, jalapeño, tomato, and a jar of stacker pickles makes for a low cost, healthy and filling sandwich. Want to know how to have a sandwich that isn’t soggy by lunch? Check out my article “No Soggy Sandwiches!”

Still hungry when you get home? Well I have a pack of Oscar Myer turkey hot dogs and use regular bread as the bun. I also have a bag of Ore Ida french-fries to go with it. Both are cheap when you go by the serving size. I also like to eat breakfast foods like pancakes or eggs. A box of pancake mix goes a long way and when you have a waffle iron? Hello! You can do other meals like soup, sandwiches, salads, etc.

Finally before I sleep I need my cookies and milk. Nestle Tollhouse Chocolate Chip Cookies are my fav. They now offer their cookie dough in a tub for roughly $4.59. Now before you wince at the price, that tub lasts 3 weeks when I make 4 cookies per night. Yum! If ice cream is your thing check out Walmart prices for their national brand items, now there they are unbeatable.

What else can you do?

Think filling and healthy when you shop and don’t overbuy! Plan out your meals in advance if  only in your head. Look for the buy one get one (BOGO) free offers. Generics and store brands aren't what they used to be either. The Publix supermarkets here in Florida have many store brand items that taste better if not equal to the major brands, after all most generic brands are often from national brand manufacturers. Walmart may save you money but an educated consumer knows what products of theirs are actually going to save them money because if you don’t like the taste of something you aren’t going to eat it. And often they are not the best deal in town, so don’t be afraid to shop around. Know your stores, know your brands, know your portions and shop wise.
